AAHP's Health Promotion Classes are online!

AAHP’s Health Promotion classes provide essential information about making the right lifestyle choices in order to improve health and prevent, manage, and reverse chronic disease.

Attendees can access classes online via Zoom. Classes include informal lectures, lively discussion, question and answer sessions. AAHP's nutritionist will also conduct cooking demonstrations of delicious and healthy dishes like fruit and vegetable smoothies, salads, and vegetarian chili. Attendees will also have the opportunity to review their health goals and progress (glucose, blood pressure, weight management, cholesterol).

SPECIAL FEATURES: Guest speakers, Games (Bingo, Scavenger Hunts, Jeopardy,  Cahoots, etc), Giveaways!

Mindfulness

Mondays, 5:30 - 6:30pm
AAHP's mindfulness class teaches individuals how to be present in the moment and aware of their thoughts and feelings. It is designed to help individuals reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and live a more fulfilling life by practicing mindfulness meditation and other techniques.

Health and Nutrition (Plant-based/Vegan)

Mondays, 6:00 - 7:15 pm
Thursdays, 1:00 - 2:30 pm
This class focuses on the numerous benefits of a plant-based/vegan diet and how it can improve your overall health by reducing your risk of chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertensions, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Healthy cooking demonstrations included!

Diabetes Prevention Program

Tuesdays, 6PM - 7PM
Join us for a yearlong program designed for people with prediabetes or people who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes and want to lower their risk. Participants will learn how to stay on track with their plans of action for weight control and exercise to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Health and Fitness (Yoga)

Trained yoga professional and psychologist Dr. Kelsey Ball will guide you through yoga poses and discuss wellness techniques.

Kick Start Your Health: Covid and Cancer

WEDNESDAYS
6:00PM - 7:15PM
This class will combine cancer-related topics with information on managing life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lifestyle choices can impact your risk for cancer. We will discuss caregiving, cancer screenings, risk factors, prevention, and cancer's impact on African Americans. 
This class will explore how the heart and lungs work; conditions like hypertension, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); and how to prevent and manage heart attacks and strokes. ⁠ Attendees can receive free diabetes and blood pressure management tools such as glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, and supplies.

Wednesdays and Thursdays

This class explores different health topics, including brain health, autoimmune disorders, mental wellness, depression, arthritis, lupus, sleep disorders, and more. Goal-setting, medications, and the impact of these diseases on the Black/African American community will also be discussed.
To complement Wednesday evening’s Kick Start Your Health’s classes focused on heart and lungs, we take a closer look and discuss different aspects of cardiovascular disease, COPD, and their complications. ⁠

This class explores different health topics, including brain health, autoimmune disorders, mental wellness, sleep disorders, and more., AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS, MENTAL WELLNESS, SLEEP DISORDERS.
We will discuss structures, functions, treatments and new options, prevention, signs, symptoms, and the impact on our community.
We will also discuss aspects of overall health, goal setting, medications and more!

Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, is renowned for its health benefits, including improving balance, flexibility, and muscle strength, and for its effectiveness in reducing stress and anxiety. This self-paced, gentle exercise combines deep breathing and slow movements, making it a form of moving meditation that enhances both mental and physical well-being.

Weight Management Program
